Crete Hit by Series of Earthquakes

Multiple Quakes, Including 6.4 Magnitude Event, Prompt Tsunami Warning

Authorities Close Mountain Gorges for Safety

Authorities on the Greek island of Crete have ordered the temporary closure of mountain gorges popular with hikers after a series of earthquakes, including a 6.4 magnitude event that triggered a tsunami warning.

The first earthquake struck at 11:10 am local time, with a magnitude of 4.1. Just two minutes later, a second quake with a magnitude of 4.0 occurred in the same area. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake, the strongest in the series, hit at 1:15 pm, causing widespread shaking and damage to buildings.

The Greek Tsunami Warning System issued a tsunami warning for the island following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake. However, the warning was later lifted after no significant wave activity was observed.
