WSU football: New-look crimson helmets coming out against San Jose State

Wait over, WSU debuts new-look crimson helmets

Crimson and gray is back in Pullman. For the first time since 2014 and only the second time since 2008, the Washington State University football team will debut alternate crimson helmets when it takes on San Jose State at 8 p.m. Friday at Gesa Field.

A fan favorite returns

The crimson helmets were a fan favorite during the Cougars’ run to the 2018 Alamo Bowl and have been brought back by WSU coach Jake Dickert.

“I think it’s awesome,” Dickert said. “I think our players are going to love it. I hope our fans love it. When you think about Washington State, you think about crimson. You think about the great tradition here. I think it will be a great look for us."

WSU athletic director Pat Chun said the decision to bring back the crimson helmets was made after hearing from fans and former players.

"We're excited to bring back the crimson helmets," Chun said. "We think it's a great way to honor our tradition and give our fans something they've been asking for."

WSU will wear the crimson helmets with white jerseys and gray pants against San Jose State.

A brief history of WSU's alternate helmets

WSU has worn alternate helmets on several occasions throughout its history. The Cougars first wore gray helmets in 1954 and have also worn white, black, and orange helmets.

WSU began wearing crimson helmets in 2008 and wore them for six seasons before switching to gray helmets in 2015.

The crimson helmets were brought back for the 2018 Alamo Bowl and were worn again in 2019.
