Ben Sasse Resigns as University of Florida President

Former Nebraska Senator Cites Wife's Health Concerns

Sasse unexpectedly announced his resignation late Thursday after just 17 months at the helm of the state's flagship university.

In a statement released by the university, Sasse cited his wife's health concerns as the reason for his decision.

"My wife Melissa has been through a difficult year of health challenges, and I need to be fully present for her and our three children during this time," Sasse said. "So, I will be resigning my position as president of the University of Florida, effective June 30."

Sasse has been a controversial figure since taking the job in Gainesville. He faced criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and for his opposition to the university's diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Despite the controversy, Sasse has also been praised for his leadership. He has increased fundraising for the university and has worked to improve the school's academic reputation.

Sasse's resignation will be effective at the end of July. The university's Board of Trustees will meet to discuss the search for a new president.
